Both Amber Heard and Jussie Smollett have been punished for their’shocking arrogance’

A word of caution to celebs and anybody else seeking attention: make sure you have the facts on your side before claiming victimization.

The Amber Heard-Johnny Depp defamation trial and the lurid case of actor Jussie Smollett’s fabricated hate crime have emphasized this issue.

A black man in Chicago and a white woman in Los Angeles may at first look appear to be two quite different circumstances.

However, a closer look reveals a common thread and a valuable lesson to be learned.

In both cases, young actors were trying to take advantage of current social movements in order to get attention and boost their professional prospects.

Both ultimately failed terribly when the truth came to light and have had to pay a heavy price as a result.

The price for Amber Heard will be both financial and reputational. In court, videotapes and audio recordings submitted by Depp’s ex-wife showed a completely different picture from the one she had built for herself.

On one of Heard’s three counterclaims of defamation, the jury sided with Depp, awarded him $10.4 million in damages, while Depp was ordered to pay Heard $2 million in compensatory damages.

Jussie Smollett, a former “Empire” actor, used the Black Lives Matter movement’s flag as a symbol of his own success.

Outraged members of the public rushed to demonstrate their support for the previously unknown actor, boosting his media profile for a short period of time.

When Smollett’s claims that two men attacked him, yelled racist slurs, threw a noose around his neck, drenched him with bleach, and told him “This is MAGA land” were examined closely in court, they were found to be untrue.

After being convicted on five felony counts of lying to police, he was sentenced to five months in prison and fined $145,000.
